It was marvelous --- a gorgeous, frightful thing --- to witness how fast they grew.

A Selection of Recent Images.

The Beast Tamer comes to us from a piece of Sumerian earthenware. I first encountered the original image in an art-history course, then stumbled across it again in Hero With a Thousand Faces; too good to pass up. Do images like this speak to us as potently as one imagines they did 4000 years ago and more?
